Children's consignment sales are becoming very popular around the United States. With the current economic climate, moms like us are looking to save money where they can. Turning your used baby and children's items into cash just makes sense. There are some key differences between giving your items to a consignment store and selling them at a consignment sale.
- Set your own prices! Stores pay pennies on the dollar and you have no control over what your items sell for. Some stores only allow you store credit. Many others only pay you 30-40% of what they will sell it for. We recommend 30% of full retail price as a starting point for pricing your items. Some items can command a higher resale value (Brands like Janie and Jack, Matilda Jane, Ergo, Beco, Large Little Tikes toys, etc.)
- Earn 60-75% of all your sales. You set the level depending on whether you choose to volunteer or not. Everyone earns at least 60% without any volunteer time.
- You decide whether or not you want your items to go half-price on Saturday. Items remain at your full selling price on Thursday and Friday. Saturday is when the real bargain hunters come out. You can choose to sell items at full or half price that day. (If you plan to donate items at the end of the sale, we recommend allowing your items to go half price on Sat. However, this is your choice).
- Donate items to charity that don't sell (and use as a tax-deduction write-off). We arrange for pick up for any items you would like donated. You get the receipt!
- Pick up unsold items and try to resell the next time around. (Note: Any items not picked up during the scheduled pick up time will be donated to charity. You can designate someone to pick up the items for you. However, they will need your name, consignor ID, and their ID and you will need to designate them on a form at drop off.)
- Shop before the general public to score the best deals! That's Right! You get a pass to shop the presale on Thursday afternoon and evening.
As 2 self-proclaimed shop-a-holic moms who love both high end items and to shop consignment stores and sales, we were frustrated with attempts to consign our items. We found it hard to get appointments to drop off items. Then we got paid very little or only store credit. We saw a few of our items sit for a long time. We also found some of our beautiful sets broken up with only a shirt or pants being taken and the other left with no match.
